Legacy
Garamba is an evolving conservation story. This UNESCO World Heritage landscape in the north of the DRC is once again becoming a stronghold for wildlife. Managed by African Parks in partnership with the ICCN, its recovery has been shaped by long-term commitment, effective protection and collaboration with surrounding communities.
This translocation brings together Munywana Conservancy, African Parks, ICCN, Barrick Gold Corporation and Kibali Gold Mine. Different roles, shared intent. Creating the conditions for rhino to belong here again.

Wildlife
Not a single act, but a choreography. The journey to Garamba unfolded across road and runway, moving through three countries - South Africa, Uganda and the DRC- with months of planning and collective expertise behind every step. And the attention continues.
โThe coming months of intensive monitoring will be crucial to ensuring their successful adaptation to their new home in Garamba. We are proud to help establish a new stronghold for rhino in Central Africa, making a meaningful contribution to the conservation of the Democratic Republic of the Congoโs remarkable biodiversity.โ Peter Fearnhead, CEO of African Parks.

Legacy
34 years ago, the translocation seeds of the Munywana Conservancy were sown in the wildlife translocations that shaped our founding populations of rhino, elephant, lion and cheetah.
Now, following a period of rewilding in the reserve, 54 white rhino from African Parksโ Rhino Rewild project have been successfully translocated to Garamba National Park, DRC.
This new introduction builds on the success of the first translocation in 2023 and supports a shared vision for this landscape as a place of global importance for the species.

African Conservation Awards
The 2025 African Conservation Awards, co-founded by @gamerangersassociationofafrica , pay tribute to the extraordinary dedication, courage, and positive impact of those working on the frontline of conservation across Africa.
Our Munywana Conservancy ranger team is honoured to have taken second place in the Best Ranger Team category.
These Awards hold a special place; rangers and conservation supporters are recognised by their peers and colleagues for the incredible work they do to protect wildlife and wild spaces across Africa.
Patron HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco has long acknowledged the dedication, commitment and resilience required to be a ranger in Africa.

MARINE LIFE
In celebration of sea turtles; a protected stretch of Indian Ocean coastline is a blue thread in the Munywana Conservancy`s tapestry of bush-to-beach natural wonders.
This seascape is home to an array of sea turtle species that include the loggerhead and giant leatherback.
These gentle creatures have the extraordinary ability of โnatal homingโ; a still-to-be-understood instinct that brings them back to the same stretch of coastline where they hatched, to lay their own eggs, years and thousands of ocean miles later.

WILDLIFE
June 2025 marked a breakthrough for rhino rewilding. Two years after African Parks acquired the worldโs largest captive breeding operation, 70 southern white rhino journeyed from South Africa to Akagera National Park, Rwanda, following a preparatory rewilding period at the Munywana Conservancy.
This cross-continental milestone, in collaboration with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), was made possible with funding from The Howard G. Buffett Foundation.

FOR A GREATER CAUSE
The 17 white rhino, formally handed over to the Tanzanian Government in a milestone ceremony this week, represent a Munywana Conservancy legacy that will now continue on Tanzaniaโs soil, with a united commitment to the conservation of this threatened species; a reminder that borders are but lines on a map, while the greater outcome of protection knows no such boundaries.
Through the relentless efforts of the Munywana Conservancy, the numbers of white rhinos have not only been safeguarded, but have flourished, catalysing the possibility of this important translocation. This gift to Tanzania is testament to the members of the conservancy; their collective vision to restore balance, and their commitment to a future where the wild has a place, where rhino thrive, and where our collaboration stands as a beacon of what can be achieved when we unite for a cause greater than ourselves.

THE POWER OF COLLECTIVE ACTION
This weekโs official handover of 17 white rhino from the Munywana Conservancy to the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania marked a momentous occasion transcending borders, redefining unity and celebrating the spirit of collaboration for the greater good of our African continent, and our planet.
The formal signatories were the Hon. Ambassador Dr Pindi Chana, on behalf of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, with Dr Alexander Lobora, Department of Wildlife, as witness.
The Munywana Conservancy was represented by Inkosi Zwelinzima Thwalizwe Gumede, Traditional leader of KwaMakhasa Traditional Authority, and Inkosi Sabelo Khumbulani Ngwane, Traditional leader KwaMnqobokazi Traditional Authority.
We are profoundly grateful for the unwavering dedication of the Tanzanian Government, their Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, whoโs steadfast commitment to conservation and the protection of our natural heritage has made this extraordinary moment possible.

@munywanaconservancy , @zukaprivategamereserve @makhasaprivategamelodge and @andbeyondphinda are no strangers to rhino conservation, having supported groundbreaking wildlife translocations for over thirty years.
This latest translocation is an important step towards the Tanzanian governmentโs long-term goal of establishing viable, genetically diverse breeding populations of the species in the country.

IT TAKES A VILLAGE
A true African village has come together to move white rhino from South Africa to Tanzania through a partnership with Tanzaniaโs Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism (MNRT), as well as the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) .
The project has moved southern white rhino donated by the Munywana Conservancy from South Africaโs KwaZulu-Natal Province to the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania.

A story with heart
The collective endeavours behind the Munywana Conservancy have set new precedents, shaped conservation learnings and changed lives, always with the touchpoints of care โ of land, of wildlife, of people.
Looking back, a founding member reflects, โItโs about the people as much as the animals. The model has a core value and has made a huge difference to the way we see things and to tens of thousands of people in rural areas.โ

A story of learnings
The restoration, development, and management of this 29,866-hectare Big Five reserve and lodge operation has generated a body of research and learnings. A decade of leopard monitoring has changed hunting legislation, and a groundbreaking project has seen the return of Temminck`s ground pangolin. Using the wildlife translocation skills honed over decades, lion, cheetah and rhino from the conservancy are reversing local extinctions and supporting founder populations across Africa

A story of community
Community partnerships have been instrumental to the expansion and conservation successes of the Munywana Conservancy. In 2007, the mutual decision of the Makhasa and Mnqobokazi community landlords to continue the use of 9,085 hectares of reclaimed ancestral land for conservation was a milestone moment. Community-led projects in collaboration with Wild Impact have spanned nursery to tertiary education and benefitted generation on generation.
